You're an experienced artist with an established visual style, feeling confident in your work. Now you want to see your art on a larger scale.

Welcome to MURAL SCHOOL: a new opportunity for Summer 2024 where experienced painters can go big like never before. Led by instructor Jay Smith, this immersive experience is tailored for artists ready to expand their presence in a significant way. Our MURAL SCHOOL intensive workshop provides a supportive environment for creating, planning, and producing a finished, publicly viewable mural in Garden City, Idaho, at The Common Well.

At MURAL SCHOOL you'll gain access to expertise from seasoned public art professionals and immediately implement those skills in your own creative process. By the end of this interactive 2-week program, you’ll have collaborated on and painted a professional mural with a great instructor and local artistic peers you now call friends. Includes meals and a $500 stipend.

Eligibility: Applicants must be 1) a current full-time resident of Ada or Canyon County or an Indigenous Boise Valley tribal member who may reside elsewhere, and  2) physically up to the challenge. Candidates respond to application prompts and submit work samples to a local selection panel for a limited number of fully-sponsored spots in the program.

KEY QUESTIONS

Describe your background and artistic practice.

• No mural experience is necessary. Have you painted a large-scale mural before? How did it go?

• Submit samples of your best work, as well as a rudimentary Self-Portrait in lead pencil.

• How would a sponsored MURAL SCHOOL experience connect to what you've done in the past—and what you plan to do in the future?

ABOUT JAY SMITH

Instructor Jay Smith has a passion for bringing local communities together through art, and bringing local artists together through community. Smith truly loves helping new and burgeoning artists learn and grow in their creativity, encouraging them to bring their art into public spaces. He brings humility and heart to his artistic practice — some of Boise’s most distinctive creative entrepreneurs have turned to Jay Smith, commissioning him to convey meaning and a sense of place through the medium of paint. His work graces some of Boise beloved community landmarks, including Hap Hap Lounge, Bill’s on Broadway, Bittercreek Alehouse, Red Feather Lounge, Push & Pour, Treefort Music Hall, Treefort Music Festival, Shadow Puppet, Wildflower Flower Shop, Flowers at Will, and Woodland Empire. With an engaging, supportive and enthusiastic teaching style, he is excited to work with MURAL SCHOOL students in July.
